Jurassic Coast’s 185 million years
It’s so dramatic too. Come and see and walk through its 185 million year history in real life for yourself. There’s naturally formed and beautiful sheltered coves and bays such as Lulworth Cove. Explore the dramatic and rugged cliffface backdrops, amazing and varied rock formations including the sea arch at Durdle Door, one of few of the world’s surviving arches. Wander along stunning headlands and stroll down to the rare and unusual Chesil Beach, a natural sandbank, on the coastline covering 18 miles.

Great for fossil hunting
Of course, it’s also a renowned for being a great area for fossil hunting and visitors come from all over the world to explore the area. Visit and explore the Jurassic Coast on your visit and see what fossils you can find, but please respect the area and your safety at all times. There are organised fossil hunts which is a great way to learn and what to look for when hunting for fossils at the same and various fossil museums to enjoy.
There are various places to find out more about the Jurassic coast and its fossils, such as Lyme Regis, Charmouth and in Dorchester and there are various museums and exhibitions about our historic coast. A great way to find out more about these are at the West Dorset Tourist Information Centres.
Also at Charmouth, and well worth visiting, is the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, which has fossil collections and more information about fossil hunting. It’s also possible to attend guided walks making your learning experience and fossil hunting even better.
