Bridport – a market town

Strolling around when visiting Bridport you’ll soon discover that it just feels like it’s an artistic town and different – and it certainly is! It’s a delightful Dorset market town surrounded by breathtaking countryside and beautiful villages. It’s only a short drive to the beach and is only approximately 1.5 miles from the picturesque harbour and fishing village of West Bay.

Another thing… about Bridport is it’s renowned all over the world for its rope and net making industry which goes back at least 800 years. When it comes to rope and net-making they certainly know what they’re doing with all that experience!

As for Arts… Bridport really has a very popular and thriving Arts Scene and culture and you’ll soon discover some great artists which live in the town. The Bridport Arts Centre is an excellent place to catch up on what art events are being held as well various music and theatre productions, the spoken word and films (further information here).

Bridport Electric Palace in South Street is a vintage theatre which holds various events throughout the year such as music, comedy, film and of course theatre – it’s a great place to visit. Another annual event held in Bridport is the quirky, and unusual, Bridport Hat Festival – definitely worth seeing if you’re visiting in early September.

Markets are fun to explore and on Wednesdays and Saturdays are the market days in Bridport with the streets full of excellent and a variety of stalls and traders. With many stalls along the streets you’ll discover a whole range of products and items, old and new, as well as all types of fresh and local produce. Bridport is definitely a must visit market – you never know what’s waiting to be discovered!

If you’re taking a break from sightseeing for the day then stroll around Bridport, browse and explore the various shops along the three main streets as well as the side streets. Of course there’s some of the usual high street names here and you’ll also discover some wonderful small, unusual and artisan shops too!
